Dr. Zaher Sahloul is an activist, physician and has co-founded multiple humanitarian organizations dedicated to aiding vulnerable populations internationally. After earning his MD from Damascus University in Syria, Dr. Sahloul migrated to the United States, completing his fellowships in Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Sahloul has received numerous awards for his humanitarian work including the Gandhi Award for Peace, the Red Cross the “Heroes Among Us” award, the Dr. Robert Kirschner’s Award for Global Activism and the Commitment to Change Award by the National Immigration Justice Center. His work was also recognized by the UN International Children’s Emergency Fund Chicago, or UNICEF, when he received the Shine a Light on Global Refugee Crisis and annual humanitarian award in 2017.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sahloul has both founded and led numerous organizations that tackle both local and international humanitarian concerns. From 2011 to 2015, he served as President of the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS), an organization he founded in 1998 dedicated to supporting Syrian Medical professionals. Additionally, Dr. Sahloul co-founded SAMS Global Response and the American Relief Coalition for Syria to address international humanitarian causes.
Since migrating to the United States, Dr. Sahloul has also been very involved with national health and humanitarian organizations. These organizations include the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, Heartland Alliance, the American Business Immigration Coalition, the Council of Islamic Organization of Greater Chicago and serving on the Illinois board of health. He has also acted as a board member of the Syrian Community Network, the Center for Public Health and Human Right, Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health and the American Islamic College.
Dr. Sahloul serves as the current President of MedGlobal, an organization he co-founded in 2017 to provide medical aid to over 9.8 million people in five continents. Since its creation MedGlobal has continued its goal “to partner with communities suffering from disasters and/or limited resources to improve access to sustainable, dignified healthcare through emergency response, health services delivery, and building resilient healthcare systems.”
Last April, Dr. Sahloul met with former President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Later that year, he also attended the State of the Union address to Congress as the guest of Illinois Senator Dick Durbin.
In addition to serving as President of MedGlobal, Dr. Sahloul is also an Associate Professor in Clinical Medicine at the University of Illinois and a Critical Care specialist at Advocate Christ Medical Center and Saint Anthony’s hospital
Currently, Dr. Sahloul is continuing his mission of advocacy and aiding those without access to critical medical care.
